Henderson House is located in the heart of Central Otago and is one of New Zealand’s premier cultural residencies. The Residency is offered by ‘invitation only’ to senior creatives whose careers have added richly to the cultural depth and understanding of who we are as New Zealanders.
Originally the home of Alexandra business and arts philanthropists, the late Barbara and Russell Henderson, ‘Henderson House’ was built in the 1950’s. It is one of only two houses in the South Island of New Zealand which were designed by the renowned Austrian architect Ernest Pliske.
The Residency, which consists of a fully furnished two bedroom house and a seperate artist’s studio, is perfectly positioned to overlook the Clutha (Mata-au) River, Alexandra township and Hawkdun and Dunstan Ranges. The Residency provides senior creatives up to one year at the house. With all overheads taken care of our Residents have the opportunity to create, work, live and interact with the community and enjoy all that the beautiful Central Otago has to offer.
Since its inception the Residency has successfully hosted over 15 of New Zealand’s finest creatives including artists, writers, composers, photographers, poets, musicians and jewellers. The Residency has allowed each of them the time and opportunity to continue to contribute to the building blocks of our national and cultural identity as New Zealanders. Many Residents have generously donated work to the Henderson House Art Collection.
