Resident with wife Jude February 2019 – May 2019
One of New Zealand’s most iconic and loved artists Dick Frizzell is also an author, philanthropist and businessman. Well known for his prolific output and distinctive style, he is highly skilled in the handling of paint and exploring an endlessly inventive range of subject matter and styles.
His pop art paintings and prints often focus on classic kiwiana iconography and as a result he has introduced a whole new audience of New Zealanders to art and what it means to be a kiwi.
During his residency Dick created a number of paintings and worked on his book ‘Me, According to the History of Art’ (Massey Press, 2020). Dick was guest speaker at several public events during his Residency including: ‘An Evening With Dick Frizzell’ Central Stories Art Gallery and Museum (a fund raiser for the gallery); Probus Alexandra, University of the Third Age U3A Alexandra and Alexandra Rotary. He also co-judged the Arts Gold Award, Alexandra. Exhibitions, as a result of his Residency, included: ‘Dick Frizzell with Octa’: a selection of original screen prints, Octa Gallery Cromwell (2019); ’BARK’ at Central Stories Alexandra (2019); ‘Out of Alex’ a body of 18 works from his time spent at Henderson House and a floor talk at Milford Galleries, Dunedin (2019).
Dick has donated an artwork and his 2020 book to the Henderson House Art Collection.
