Dr Philip Temple ONZM (Writer) and Diane Brown (Novelist, Memoirist,Poet)

Philip Temple is a Dunedin-based New Zealand author.  He was educated in London but emigrated to New Zealand at the age of 18 where he went on to become an explorer, mountaineer and outdoor educator.  He is a prolific writer of over 40 books and countless articles and reviews.

His work is characterized by a strong association with the outdoors and New Zealand ecology.  His work spans award winning children’s stories, and non-fiction to novels set in New Zealand Europe.  In recognition of his contribution to New Zealand literature he has been awarded a Doctor of Literature by the University of Otago; awarded the Prime Ministers Award for Literary Achievement and awarded an ONZM in for his Services to Literature.  He has also been awarded The Wattie Award; The Katherine Mansfield Memorial Fellowship; The Robert Burns Fellowship; a Berliner Kunstlerprogramm Stipendium; the New Zealand National Library Fellowship; the Creative New Zealand Berlin Writers Residency and was named President of Honour of the New Zealand Society of Authors (PEN NZ) for 2015/16. 

During his residency Philip main focus was on his research and writing which resulted in ‘Life as a Novel: A Biography of Maurice Shadbolt. Two Volumes 1932 – 1973’ published David Ling 2018.   He also revised and proof read a new edition of ‘The Sea and the Snow’ (originally published 1966) and republished in UK (2016); worked on ‘Manifesto: 101 Political Poems, an Anthology’(co-edited with Emma Neale). Otago University Press.  He also wrote and delivered the Janet Frame Memorial Lecture entitled ‘Where we Were, Where we are Now’ at the 2016 Wellington Writers Festival (in his capacity as President of Honour of PEN NZ). Philip also acted as a judge at the International Town Criers Festival; gave a lecture to U3A Alexandra; took part in creative writing seminar about biographies in Wanaka (2016) and was guest speaker at both the Wanaka and Alexandra Libraries 

Philip donated several of his books to the Henderson House Art Collection.

Diane Brown is a novelist, memoirist, and poet who runs her own creative writing school, Creative Writing Dunedin.  She was awarded an MNZM for her Services to Writing and Education.  She has published numerous collections of poetry and novels and is the recipient of numerous awards including: NZSA Best First Book of Poetry at the Montana Book Awards; Buddle Findlay Sargeson Fellowship; an inaugural fellow at the Michael King Writer’s Studio; the Janet Frame Memorial Award and the Beatson Fellowship.

During her residency Diane worked on final draft of her poetic memoir, ‘Taking My Mother To the Opera’ published in 2015 and worked on her long narrative poem ‘Every Now and then I have Another Child’, Otago University Press (2020).  She also spoke to the Alexandra Writing Group in Community house; hosted writers workshops at Henderson House; acted as a judge at the International Town Criers Festival; taught a one day short story course at Henderson House; spoke at Alexandra U3A; taught ‘Writing Your Course’ at the Wanaka Art School (2016) and gave readings at both the Wanaka and Alexandra. Libraries.

Diane gifted a number of her publications to the Henderson House Art Collection.
