Laurence Aberhart (Photographer)

Resident 2012

Laurence Aberhart is recognised as one of New Zealand’s most eminent photographers.

His signature black and white images of New Zealand’s landscapes, facades, monuments and interiors are entrenched in this country’s art history and he is often seen as one of the forefathers of New Zealand’s contemporary photographic history. Since the 1970s his work has featured in many photographic exhibitions and shown in museums across the globe, including Australia, the United States and France. He has been awarded several residencies including the Tylee Cottage Art Residency, Wanganui and the Dunedin Public Art Gallery Residency (late 1990s).

During his residency Laurence exhibited 46 photographs from his time at Henderson House at the Eastern Southland Art Gallery, Gore.  The exhibition went on to tour a number of venues in Southland and Central Otago and portions of the work have also been used in exhibitions in Dunedin, Sydney, Auckland and Whanganui.  Laurence also met with local artists and undertook a two day workshop at the Invercargill Polytechnic.

Laurence has donated a photograph to the Henderson House Art Collection.
